Who doesn’t love curling up next to a nice and warm cozy fire on a chilly night? We sure do! Adding an outdoor fire pit or fireplace to your landscaping project is a fabulous idea and easier than you think. What’s great is that you don’t even need a lot of room to start!
When deciding what to include in your landscape there are so many options that could be overwhelming to you. First, you have two design options you can choose from, an outdoor fireplace or a fire pit. Design options for your fireplace include wood burning, propane, or gas.
To help with the overwhelm, here are some design tips for selecting the right outdoor fire pit or fireplace for your yard or patio.
- Space: Before getting your heart set on a design, you should consider the space you will be working with. Start by asking yourself, how much room do you have to work with? What vision for your design are you seeing? Be sure to consider where you’ll have seating as well. Depending on which option you choose, each requires a reasonable amount of square footage keeping five to seven feet of additional space on all sides.
- Intention: What is the intended use for your outdoor fireplace or fire pit? How you want to use your fire pit or fireplace goes along with how much space you will need. Are you intending the fire will be used for ambience or warmth? Or possibly both? Whichever way you choose, different designs will have different features.
- Patio cover or Open: Do you want to sit around your fireplace or fire pit under a patio cover or open and under the stars? No matter what you’d prefer, there will be different things that need to be considered. This includes the type of fuel that you intend to burn (wood, natural gas, propane), the ceiling height that you’ll be working with (if applicable) and the chimney height.
- Permanent or moveable: Ask yourself, do you want an inground fire pit, a permanent fireplace, or a fire pit that you can move? Fire pits that you can move are typically propane or wood burning. In-ground or permanent fire pits and fireplaces are either wood burning or natural gas. Do keep in mind that if you want a natural gas fireplace or fire pit you may need a permit and will need to work with a licensed contractor. Which is something we here at Stoney Acres specialize in!
- Style: Whether you choose a permanent or moveable fireplace or fire pit it should look like it belongs with the rest of your landscape. Fire pits and fireplace styles come in a wide range of sizes, shapes, designs, and material. Your landscaper and contractor can certainly help you choose what works best!
