Looking for the best trees to plant so you can get away from the summer heat? We hear you!
With over 60,000 species of trees to choose from, it can be quite a challenge trying to figure out which of these to actually plant in your yard. Not to mention, which ones will do well in your location. Which is why we’re here to help!
When choosing a tree, you have to take a number of factors into consideration. These factors include your geographic location, and for the sake of this post, we’re going to focus on the east coast. Specifically, Pennsylvania.
There are quite a number of trees that can grow well in your yard, but let’s just focus on five for now that we recommend to our customers most often.
Are you ready to learn all about them? Let’s go!
California Sycamores
Looking for really great shade for the summer? This species is at the top of our list for a good reason! Did you know that California Sycamores can actually grow to a height of 80 ft? Talk about a giant!
Not only that, Sycamores are also quick-growing trees that can withstand even inclement weather. Make sure you have enough space in your yard though, as these trees are known to have quite an aggressive root system. So see to it that you allow a 12-foot clearance around the tree if you’re planning to have one in your yard.
This is the perfect tree for those wide open spaces that need some shade on your property.
Northern Red Oaks
Although these species of trees are relatively shorter than California Sycamores (if you can call 75 ft ‘short’, that is), it’s a really good source of shade. Like Sycamores, this type of tree can grow in almost every condition imaginable, but will need a clearance of some 45 feet. Wherever this tree grows, however, you can be sure that you’ll have one luxuriant shade to look forward to in the summer.
Tulip Trees
Yes, you read that right. There are tulip trees, and no they’re not in any way related to the famous tulip flowers. You’re probably wondering why they’re called ‘tulip trees’, and that’s because their leaves are shaped like tulip flowers. In terms of their height and spread, however, they’re much more similar to northern red oaks. This tree is a great addition to your yard, especially as the leaves turn a beautiful shade of yellow during the fall.
These are a great option not only for shade, but a beautiful colorful focal point in your landscape.
Weeping Willows
Despite the name, weeping willows are not at all depressing to look at in your yard. These trees grow to a height of some 40 feet and have a distinctive feature and are best recognized for their long and sweeping branches. It’s important to note, however, that this species thrive best in areas with abundant water supply and not too much sun. If you choose to plant them in your yard, make sure to give it a clearance of some 35 feet to make room for its roots.
Also, be aware they are messy. However, they are absolutely beautiful and unique. Think of places like Charleston with the willows that line people’s driveways for optimum shade and allure.
Willow Oaks
Last but definitely not the least on our list are willow oaks. These trees are best known for their bright summer foliage and would definitely make for a beautiful sight when they’re in full bloom. They grow best in areas that receive a generous amount of sunlight and can grow as tall as 60 feet high.
